El 23 de noviembre del 2004 es lanzado el box set "With the lights out", que surge luego de haberse pospuesto en septiembre del 2001 (lanzamiento oficial) debido a problemas legales con Courtney Love y los integrantes de la banda (Novoselic y Grohl). La disputa - o buena parte de ella - se centró alrededor de "You Know You're Right", una canción grabada en Enero de 1994, en la sesión final de estudio de la banda. Grohl y Novoselic lo querían para el box set, pero Love dijo que sería mejor lanzarlo como single e incluirlo en una compilación de "Grandes Éxitos". En el 2002, hubo un acuerdo entre las dos partes, y "You Know You're Right" fue lanzado como single y apareció en la compilación Nirvana. Esto abrió el camino a lo que se convertiría en With the Lights Out, que llegó 2 años más tarde con más música de la que se había prometido originalmente.
